A Sweet Sentiment

We stumbled upon this refreshing review of our store and couldn't help but to be touched by the kind words of one of our customers, who altruistically and so enthusiastically paid homage to our name. We thank you for loving us and for reminding us why we love doing what we do!
"Juliet was wrong. She tells Romeo in that completely overdone and overappreciated balcony scene in Shakespeare's most famous play, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Some might weep at the romantic complexitiy of the moment, but I like to go against the majority, and I cry foul. I realize that Romeo and Juliet are overcoming prejudices, not judging the book by the cover, and finding the beauty within, but sometimes I have to channel my inner Miranda (of SATC fame) and remind the world that it's just not practical! I could never marry a Richard! Not because it's not a fine name, but because it's my brother's name, and I won't say anything further except that it could prove very problematic during certain situations. So what does all this have to do with a home furnishing store in Laguna Beach? Hello? It's the name, silly! Who wouldn't want to go into a store with such a fun and exciting name like "Tuvalu!" It makes me giddy like a little sprite dancing and singing ditties on a deserted island that preferably does not get attacked by tempests. And it should, because Tuvalu stocks delightfully untacky beach-themed decorations that make me wish I owned a house by the ocean just so I can accessorize it with all their pretty scented candles, fixtures, linens, paintings, and various other odds and ends that are sure to make one feel like they are on a fab tropical getaway! Of course one doesn't need to fear mudslides, tsunamis and hurricanes to capture a piece of paradise. My WeHo-adjacent apartment is exceedingly happy with the Palm Tree stem-inspired candlesticks that I have placed on the mantel of my fake fireplace. It's nice to have a piece of Tuvalu to look at during the dark and light moments of life. I think everyone could use a little Tuvalu! Come on, say it with me! Tuvalu! Tuvalu! Tuvalu! Maybe if Shakespeare had named "the Tempest," "Tuvalu" people would have liked it better than that silly "Romeo and Juliet." Dying for love is just soooo cliched. Go buy your hunny an adorable over-priced sea turtle fixture for his/her garden instead! Nothing says love like emptying the wallet! (well... maybe filling the belly...)"

Wow, so eloquent and kind! Thank you - thank you Diana. Your kind words come just after we have had a busy month of completing our holiday selections and creating our store concept changes for Fall 2008 and Spring 2009. Summer is in full swing and kind words such as yours are so appreciated.

With regard to the selection of the name "Tuvalu". As with naming a child, naming a store is also quite complicated. The store concept was easy. I wanted to compile several collections of furniture and accessories in a calm and eclectic enivironment that was easy for customers to shop because we would blend the vendors and the styles for them. From the start, I always bought based on the artist, the story behind the pieces and their uniqueness.

The name selection was a more difficult process. It started with random phrases which is so typical and ended when I realized I wanted to tie the name to a mood. Fiji is amazing. I am lucky enough to have traveled their once for a Hobie Cat World sailing event with my family and the memories and people have stayed with us forever. The name Tuvalu is from the chain of islands just off the tip of Fiji. It is a small chain of islands with only 80 visitors each year.

Our travel was amazing and I am so happy that your shopping experience was also memorable. We are lucky that we love what we do, love who we buy from and love our customers. Please introduce yourself when you come through town again.
Sincerely,
Laurie

What's in a name? Plenty!! Tuvalu is the second smallest country in the world and boasts the cleanest air & environment and purest lifestyle. for that reason, Tuvalu is the PERFECT name for your wonderful store. Pure and simple. The only drawback is the fact that it takes so long to walk through because EVERYWHERE you look, you are seeing some unique item for the first time. Come back in 3 weeks and guess what? It has completely evolved yet again! Without a doubt, the coolest store on the California Coast. Keep it up, keep it fun and keep in coming! You guys ROCK!

Laurie,

You truly have actualized the store concept and meaning behind its name. While I have only had the opportunity to shop at Tuvalu on a few occasions, each visit sticks out in my mind as more than just an ordinary stop at a furniture and accessory store. Shopping there is an experience. Like traveling to an exotic locale and stumbling upon a boutique that reflects the local culture. I can tell that each item has been chosen for a reason -- that is what distinguishes your shop from the Z Galleries and Pottery Barns of the world. It's a special place and I will be sure to come in and introduce myself the next time I make a trip down south.

Best,
Diana
